Vision allows you to create new areas by drawing a boundary line on the map. This is particularly useful for users whose areas do not conform to other geographies (such as Postcodes/ZIP codes).
Prerequisites
- You need to be logged into Vision.
- Your subscription must include Feature Pack 2 or higher.
- You need to have at least one area layer which has been created for custom boundaries. See here for how to create one.
- You need to have editing permissions.
Estimated time: Up to 5 minutes.
Getting started
Start by making sure you've turned on the area layer you want to draw a new area in. Then, click the 'Actions' button.
In the actions menu, click the 'Create new area' button. This will launch the area editor for creating your area.
Drawing the area using the polygon tool
To get started, click the 'Tools' button within the area editor on the right-hand side. Then, under the 'Drawing tools' section, click the 'Draw a new area' button.
Click on the map to place your first coordinate. As you move your cursor to another location on the map, you'll notice your cursor is joined by a line to the last coordinate you set. Click to set another coordinate, and repeat the process to draw your area.
When you're finished, simply click the first coordinate you placed, or double-click to set a final coordinate - which is then automatically joined to your first coordinate. Your area will then be highlighted on the map.
Repeat this process if you need to add other areas to the one you're creating - an area does not have to have a single contiguous boundary!
When you've finished, click the 'Continue' button to move to the next step.
Completing the process
Saving your new custom area is easy. Simply give the new area a name, and optionally (if you've set them up), select a classification to assign to the area.
When you've finished, click the 'Save' button to complete the process.
